This cookbook is a 1969 edition of Betty Crocker’s Cookbook, commonly referred to as the “red pie cookbook,” as adapted by the Bayliss/Hunter/Leftwich/Jolley family over the course of the twentieth century. Following the success of the first Betty Crocker Cookbook, this edition was widely popular for its time. This particular cookbook has been expanded to include an elaborate collection of family recipes tucked in various pages throughout the book. These recipes include newspaper clippings, vintage “receipt” cards, and handwritten notes scrawled on stained pieces of mail. The book reflects a strong influence of traditional southern cooking, as the Bayliss/Hunter/Leftwich family have long resided in the Robertson county area of Middle Tennessee. As a whole, the altered cookbook displays a glimpse into domestic life in rural Tennessee, and how historical moments over time have affected the lifestyles of four generations of women and their practices.
