Dungeness Crabs and Blackberry Cobblers The Northwest Heritage Cookbook

Published: 1991 First Paperback Edition: 1996

Author: Janie Hibler

This cookbook was written by Janie Hibler, a native of the Pacific Northwest and author of four other books: The Berry Bible, Wild About Game, Easy and Elegant Seafood, and Fair Game: A Hunter’s Cookbook.  Originally from rural Bayside California, 120 miles south of the Oregon border, she took the region and its culinary features for granted until well into her adulthood.  Hibler’s recipes frequently include ingredients, gathered, hunted, or caught outdoors which brings a certain rustic and, “homespun” feel to the dishes throughout her book.  The first section of recipes is specifically aimed to capture this feel, titled, “Appetizing Bites of the Northwest” where each recipe contains a small anecdote along with ingredients and instructions.

While this cookbook mostly focuses on illuminating the food of the Pacific Northwest, listed in the Acknowledgements are, the Japanese American Citizens League of Seattle, and the Nordic Heritage Museum of Seattle shortly after the first recipe listed is Vietnamese in origin.  The Pacific Northwest has always been and continues to be a region of immigrants, Hibler captures the spirit of the region and the people who reside there preserving their way of life.
