The Junior League, a volunteer organization of women who believed they could make a difference, was founded by Mary Harriman at the turn of the century. The Junior League’s values and goals resulted from the Progressive Era ideals. The Junior League of Mcallen was founded in 1938, continuing the tradition of creating future female leaders of the community, specifically in volunteer work. This cookbook was created in order to demonstrate the spirit of the “Piñata,” a tradition in Hispanic cultural celebrations where you break open a decorated paper object so you can share the surprises inside with others. This cookbook is full of all kinds of recipes that are native to the Rio Grande Valley and from the general food culture at the time. This is a special cookbook to my family because my entire father’s side of the family is from the Rio Grande Valley and many of the recipes are similar to family recipes that we have enjoyed for decades. The Junior League of Mcallen cookbook includes recipes from the Gulf Coast, ranching areas, and Mexican-American food culture which are all types of food my family and I grew up on.
