Simple Italian Cookery

1959

Publisher: Peter Pauper Press

Author: Edna Beilenson Illustrator: Ruth McCrea

This Cookbook contains Italian recipes that would be popular in the 1950’s as well as today. The art work on the cover of the cookbook is a theme that is carried throughout the rest of the cook book. The book follows a traditional Italian meal by beginning with comforting meals such as meat tomato sauce that most would have in their home and including more rustic and traditional Italian meals. The recipes are also elegant, yet simplistic in their ingredient list as well as the preparation of the meals. Edna Beilenson wrote many cookbooks in a similar vein to her Simple Italian Cookery cookbook including Simple Jewish Cookery, Simple German Cookery, and many others. Her title for her cookbooks make an unfamiliar cuisine feel approachable by using simple titles, clear and concise instructions along with minimalist and abstract art that was popular during the late 1950’s. Beilenson also explains Italian phrases such as  gnocchi by using relatable, more americanized words like potato dumplings which adds to the approachability of this cooking style.
