Southern Sideboards

Publication Year:

Authors: Mrs Clyde X. Copeland, Mrs Patrick H. Scanlon, Mrs Ancel C. Tipton Jr.

This cookbook was put together by the Junior League of Jackson Mississippi. This cookbook is called Southern Sideboards and was mass produced (100,000 copies). It was not written by a sole author, but collected by the members of the Junior League. A unique aspect of this book was how it not only offered recipes but it offered the cooking basics for each type of recipe. This included things as simple as a meat seasoning to more complex cooking techniques like deboning a chicken. In addition to providing tested recipes, the book offered “rainy day activities” for children and how to prepare food as gifts for others. This cookbook was clearly collected and put together by people in a society that put value on entertaining and providing for others. This is evident through the yields of the recipes, the kid friendly crafts, and the preparation of food for gifts.
