Talk About Good! : Le Livre de la Cuisine de Lafayette

1967 (First Edition)

Publisher: Junior League of Lafayette, Inc.

Contributors: Members of The Lafayette Junior League, their relatives, and friends.

This cookbook was an effort to fundraise by The Junior League of Lafayette, which was founded in 1957 as the Service League of Lafayette and became part of the Association of Junior Leagues International in 1974. In the introduction of the cookbook, they say that “proceeds from the sale of Talk About Good! will be used for community service projects sponsored by the Junior League of Lafayette, Inc.” The Junior League of Lafayette has raised over eight point seven million dollars so far to fund and support their mission of outreach and service.

This book is a series of recipes ranging from classic Cajun cuisine to basic categories such as “eggs, cheese, grits, and rice”. The book puts a specific emphasis on the area’s cultural heritage, mentioning that they drew inspiration from Indian encampments, Spanish explorers, French, German, Scots, Irish, English, and West Indian peoples. There is a specific section titled “Mardi Gras” that consists of traditional recipes to be cooked for the holiday. Since the members of the Lafayette Junior League and their families are from the area, there is a clear southern cajun influence in the recipes, which brings an extra flair to the otherwise traditional compilation of family recipes in the book.
