The Sewanee Cookbook: A Collection of Autographed Recipes from Southern Homes and Plantations

1926

Author: Mrs. George Augustine Washington

The Sewanee Cookbook: A Collection of Autographed Recipes from Southern Homes and Plantations was written and compiled right here on Sewanee’s domain. It was published in 1926. It was compiled by generations of self-titled “housewives” amongst family homes in Sewanee. The project was led by Mrs. George Augustine Washington, known as “Queenie” to members of the community, who also contributed multiple of her recipes into the cookbook. This cookbook was created, which it mentions, with the purpose of lighting up the Memorial Cross that looks out into the valley from the Cumberland Plateau. These recipes come from families who settled on the Mountain for one reason or another, but the origins of the recipes themselves are spread widely across the South and even across the world. There are three dozen sections of recipes in this cookbook. Another additional interesting factor of this cookbook is the inclusion of other menus and special notes that are not related to food, including home remedies.
